Mouth Cancer Screening

Cancer affects us all. While much work is being done to try and fight this disease, catching it as early as possible is the first and most important step. We offer our patients a mouth cancer screening service so that we can stay one step ahead.

Mouth or oral cancer occurs when tumours form in the mouth, on the lips or on the tongue. Although the exact cause is not known, it can be exacerbated by lifestyle choices such as smoking.

Our dentists at Knowle Dental Practice will examine your mouth for any signs of oral cancer and refer you immediately if this is a concern.

Signs and symptoms of oral cancer may also indicate other health issues, so it is important to contact us if you notice any changes in your mouth. Possible symptoms include:

  • Lumps in the mouth or neck that don’t go away
  • Numbness of the tongue or lips
  • Red or white patches in the mouth, or on the tongue
  • Sores or ulcers that don’t heal after a few weeks

Please contact us as quickly as possible if you recognise any of these symptoms.

During routine appointments, we will always make note of any changes and keep an eye on unusual symptoms that don’t resolve after a short time.
